Lyrical Topography: Portfolio Number Four

Fotovision is pleased to present the fourth portfolio of its fine-print program for photography lovers to collect signed, museum-quality prints. Donations support Fotovision’s workshop programming, student scholarships, and public lectures and events by world-class photographers.

This offering is small. A total of only 30 prints of each image is available. All prints are donated by the artists, and signed on the recto. Details about the prints are below. You may acquire them as a portfolio or as single prints.

In addition to this collection, we have a very special Platinum Edition in partnership with master printer Chris McCaw. Each year we’ll choose a classic image to reinterpret with this beautiful platinum process in which archival art paper is frozen, coated with platinum and handcrafted in a traditional darkroom. Our first offering is a classic image by Dorothea Lange and is made in special partnership with the Oakland Museum of California in an edition of 25 prints.

Ernest Lowe began documenting Central Valley farm workers in 1959. Dorothea Lange gave him her blessing, a camera and a grant for him to continue this project. It is an exhaustive, beautiful study of historic import that documents the lives of fieldworkers.

Chris McCaw is a master platinum printer whose work is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, George Eastman House, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This print is from “The Family Farm”, an ongoing nostalgic documentation of his grandparents’ farm in the Central Valley of California.

Darcy Padilla is a west coast photojournalist whose work has been exhibited internationally. Among her many awards are the Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and an Individual Fellowship from the Open Society Institute. This image is from her series about contemporary life in Cuba.

Jack Picone is based in Bangkok. His work has been featured in numerous international magazines. He has received many awards including a Photographer of the Year Award (POY), a World Press Photo award and the 2006 UNESCO Documentary Book Award. These novice monks are Burmese refugees who have found a safe and healing life in the monastery.

Michael Rauner is a multi-media artist whose work is held by the George Eastman House and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This project explores the spiritual quest in California, the far frontier of American religion.
